Cairns

Cairns sits where the rainforest meets the reef, a low-rise tropical city that exists almost entirely as a jumping-off point for two World Heritage areas. The Esplanade lagoon replaces the beach you don't have here, and the marina is lined with dive boats heading to the outer reef at dawn. You'll spend more time on the water or in the Daintree than you will in town, but the city itself has a relaxed, sun-soaked energy that makes it easy to settle in between adventures.

Most visitors stay three to five nights. Two days covers a reef trip and a rainforest day tour to the Daintree or Kuranda. Five nights lets you add Cape Tribulation, the Tablelands, or a liveaboard dive trip. The city is compact and walkable, and nearly every tour includes hotel pickup. Cairns Airport is eight kilometres from the centre, a fifteen-minute shuttle or taxi ride that costs around twelve to twenty dollars.

Getting around

The city centre is flat and walkable, stretching two kilometres from the Esplanade to the marina. Taxis and Uber operate across town, with short trips costing ten to fifteen dollars. Sunbus runs local routes for four dollars fifty per ride, but most attractions require a tour or rental car. If you're heading north to Port Douglas or Cape Tribulation, rental cars start at fifty dollars per day. Bikes are available for hire along the Esplanade for around thirty dollars per day, useful for cruising the foreshore but not much beyond.

What to eat

Cairns leans into seafood and tropical produce. Order barramundi grilled with macadamia crust, mud crab from the inlet, or prawns pulled fresh that morning. The Esplanade and marina precinct hold most of the sit-down restaurants, with mains running twenty-five to forty-five dollars. Rusty's Markets on Saturdays is the place for mangoes, dragon fruit, and ready-made laksa or Vietnamese rolls. The Night Markets on the Esplanade open daily from five pm, offering cheap stir-fries, satay, and gelato for under fifteen dollars.
